Bitvavo review: fees, staking and safety for EU investors
Bitvavo review for EU residents: MiCA-licensed by the Dutch AFM, 0.15%/0.25% fees and free iDEAL, Bancontact and SEPA deposits. What €100 or €1,000 costs.
Bitvavo suits EU residents who want to buy and hold crypto in euros at low cost: 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker, with free iDEAL, Bancontact and SEPA deposits, under a MiCA licence from the Dutch AFM. Look elsewhere for futures, a crypto card or cheap card deposits. Its staking and lending sit outside MiCA, and it lost access to €280 million at Genesis in 2022.
Good fit if you
- Buying crypto in euros with iDEAL, Wero, Bancontact or SEPA
- Regular buys of €100 a month at low cost
- Choosing from 450+ coins on a euro order book
- Dutch and Belgian residents who want a local, AFM-licensed exchange
Look elsewhere if you
- You want crypto futures or perpetuals
- You want a crypto debit card
- You fund by card, Apple Pay or PayPal (1% fee)
- You want staking covered by MiCA rules
Bitvavo is one of the cheapest licensed ways for people in the EU to buy crypto with euros: 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker, with free iDEAL, Bancontact and SEPA deposits. Our verdict is “this way” for low-cost euro crypto buys; look elsewhere if you want futures, a crypto card or staking with MiCA protection.
This Bitvavo review is written for readers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Ireland and the rest of the EU. We checked Bitvavo’s fee page, its website, the ESMA MiCA register and news reports on 23 October 2026. We haven’t run a test account, so this review describes what Bitvavo publishes, not hands-on impressions.
Bitvavo review in short
Bitvavo is an Amsterdam-based euro crypto exchange, licensed under MiCA by the Dutch AFM, that charges 0.25% or less per trade and offers 450+ coins, staking and margin trading. The table sums up what matters.
| Bitvavo | |
|---|---|
| Licence | MiCA, Bitvavo B.V., authorised by the AFM on 26 June 2025 |
| Available in | 25 SEPA countries, including NL, DE, BE and IE |
| Trading fees (entry tier) | 0.15% maker, 0.25% taker |
| Deposits | iDEAL/Wero, Bancontact, SEPA free; card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal 1% |
| Euro withdrawal | Free by SEPA |
| Coins | 450+, traded in euros |
| Extras | Staking, lending, recurring buys, margin up to 10x |
| Not offered | Futures, crypto card |
The main upside is low, transparent fees in euros. The main catch sits next to it: the earn products (staking and lending) fall outside MiCA, and Bitvavo’s 2022 Genesis exposure shows why that matters.
What is the Bitvavo exchange?
The Bitvavo exchange is a Dutch crypto platform, founded in 2018 and based in Amsterdam, that lets you buy, sell and store digital assets in euros through an app and a website. It runs an order book for EUR markets, plus staking, lending, margin trading and an API. Next to the simple mobile app, the Bitvavo platform has a professional-level trading interface for advanced traders.
Bitvavo reports more than 2 million users and calls itself the largest EUR spot exchange. Those are company claims; we haven’t verified them independently, and size alone says little about how well your money is protected.
Is Bitvavo licensed? Yes, under MiCA
Yes. Bitvavo B.V. (KvK 68743424) was authorised by the Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) as a MiCA crypto-asset service provider on 26 June 2025, for custody, operating a trading platform and transfer services, passported to all other EEA countries. That licence replaced its earlier national registrations.
Bitvavo’s regulatory path in short:
| Year | Step |
|---|---|
| 2020 | Registered with De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) under the Dutch anti-money laundering act (Wwft), in November |
| 2023 | A Rotterdam court partly upheld a challenge by Bitvavo and other Dutch crypto firms against DNB supervision fees |
| 2024 | Registered in France, adding to registrations in Austria, Italy and Spain |
| 2025 | MiCA authorisation from the AFM on 26 June |
Bitvavo in the Netherlands and other countries
For Dutch residents, the timing mattered: the Netherlands gave DNB-registered firms only until 30 June 2025 to get a MiCA licence, and Bitvavo was authorised four days before that deadline. It serves residents of 25 SEPA countries, including Germany, Belgium and Ireland. Belgian residents are pointed to bitvavo.be. Bitvavo is not available in the US.
To open a Bitvavo account you must live in a supported country and fund it from a bank account in your own name.
Bitvavo fees: low costs explained
Bitvavo charges 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker on EUR markets at the entry tier, and the fees fall as your 30-day trading volume rises. Deposits by iDEAL/Wero, Bancontact and SEPA are free, so for most buyers the taker fee is the only cost.
| 30-day volume (EUR markets) | Maker | Taker |
|---|---|---|
| €0 and up (entry tier) | 0.15% | 0.25% |
| From €100,000 | 0.10% | 0.20% |
| €100 million and up | 0.00% | 0.02% |
| USDC markets | 0.05% | 0.05% |
How the fees work in practice:
- Market orders pay the taker fee of 0.25%.
- Limit orders that wait in the order book pay the maker fee. Bitvavo reserves the maximum 0.25% when you place a limit order and refunds the difference if your actual fee is lower.
- Price Guarantee is an optional way to buy at a fixed quote. You trade against Bitvavo itself, with a spread built into the price, and Bitvavo doesn’t publish how large that spread is. Our spread explainer shows why that matters.
Worked examples: €100 and €1,000
Here is what buying bitcoin costs on the exchange with the published fees, funded by a free iDEAL or SEPA deposit. The same fees apply to ethereum and every other coin on EUR markets.
| Purchase | Market order (0.25% taker) | Limit order (0.15% maker) |
|---|---|---|
| €100 | €0.25 | €0.15 |
| €1,000 | €2.50 | €1.50 |
| €100 a month for a year | €3.00 | €1.80 |
The sums: €100 × 0.25% = €0.25, €1,000 × 0.25% = €2.50, and twelve monthly €100 market orders cost 12 × €0.25 = €3.00.
Paying by card changes the picture. Deposit €100 by credit card and you pay €1.00 (1%); buying with the remaining €99 as a market order adds €0.25, for about €1.25 in total. On €1,000 by card, that is €10.00 plus €2.48, so about €12.48. If you can, use iDEAL, Bancontact or a SEPA transfer.
For comparison, the same €100 in the Crypto.com app costs €0.80 plus a spread, so Bitvavo’s low trading costs are a real advantage for small, regular buys.
Deposits and withdrawals
| Method | Fee | Maximum per deposit |
|---|---|---|
| iDEAL / Wero | Free | €50,000 |
| Bancontact | Free | €10,000 |
| SEPA bank transfer | Free | €5,000,000+ |
| Credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal | 1.00% | €10,000 |
| SEPA withdrawal | Free | |
| Bitcoin withdrawal | 0.000018 BTC |
Other coins have their own withdrawal fees, which follow the cost of sending a transaction on each blockchain.
What you can buy and trade on Bitvavo
Bitvavo offers 450+ cryptocurrencies and other crypto-assets, from bitcoin and ethereum to small altcoins. Every cryptocurrency on the main markets trades against the euro. You can place market and limit orders, set up recurring buys, stake selected coins and trade on margin, but there are no futures and no crypto card.
Recurring buys and dollar cost averaging
Bitvavo lets you buy crypto on a recurring schedule, a form of dollar cost averaging: you invest a fixed amount at set intervals instead of trying to time the market. You can change the amount or frequency, or skip a purchase. Our guide to dollar cost averaging explains how it works and its limits: spreading your buys lowers timing risk, but it doesn’t protect you if prices keep falling. Keep crypto to a share of your portfolio you could afford to lose.
Margin trading
Bitvavo offers margin trading on 20 assets with up to 10x leverage, so you can go long or short. Borrowing costs 0.0023% per hour, and a liquidation costs 2%. Borrowing €1,000 for 30 days costs about €16.56 (0.0023% × 24 hours × 30 days = 1.656%). Most retail traders lose money with leverage, and a small move against you can wipe out your margin.
Bitvavo staking and lending (Earn)
Bitvavo staking lets you earn rewards on selected coins, with Flex (you keep access to your assets) or Fixed (you lock them up for higher rewards). Bitvavo also lets you lend out your crypto to earn rewards. Bitvavo states that both products are not regulated under MiCA.
That distinction matters:
- Bitvavo B.V. provides staking, and Bitvavo Custody B.V. provides lending.
- Bitvavo says the safeguards for regulated crypto services may not apply to these products.
- Lending out crypto adds counterparty risk: you depend on whoever borrows it paying it back. Bitvavo’s own 2022 Genesis exposure, below, is an example of that risk.
We don’t quote reward rates here, because they change often. See our best crypto staking platforms page for alternatives, and read the product terms before you lock anything up.
Is Bitvavo safe? Security, custody and track record
On security, Bitvavo is licensed under MiCA, keeps most crypto in cold storage and publishes a proof-of-reserves attestation, but no exchange can make crypto risk-proof, and two events in its history are worth knowing. Crypto-assets can fall in value all the way to zero, and they are not covered by the Dutch investor compensation scheme.
Custody and proof of reserves
- Client money: Bitvavo says user funds sit in a bankruptcy-remote foundation, Stichting Bitvavo Payments, separate from the company.
- Cold storage: Bitvavo says the vast majority of assets are in offline cold wallets with multi-signature controls. It doesn’t publish a percentage.
- Insurance: there is no insurance fund. Bitvavo says its custody providers are insured up to $755 million.
- Proof of reserves: an attestation by The Network Firm LLP for selected assets (bitcoin, ether, SOL, XRP, EUR and others), with ratios as of 31 March 2026. It covers selected assets only.
Security also depends on you: use a strong password and keep your login details private. For extra control, you can withdraw crypto to an external wallet you own, such as a hardware wallet from Ledger, and hold the keys yourself. Whichever exchange you use, don’t keep your whole crypto portfolio in one place.
Track record: Genesis in 2022 and the CEO’s exit in 2025
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2022 | About €280 million that Bitvavo had lent to Genesis Global Capital for off-chain staking became inaccessible after Genesis froze withdrawals. Bitvavo said customer withdrawals were not affected. |
| 2025 | Co-founder and CEO Mark Nuvelstijn stepped down in July 2025 after the Financieele Dagblad (FD) reported alleged anti-money laundering and insider-trading breaches in his private investments. CFO Johan van Olffen became interim CEO. We found no regulator outcome on the matter. |
According to the reports, the allegations concerned his private investments. Even so, together with the Genesis exposure, it is why we score Bitvavo’s protection at 8 rather than 9 or 10.
Bitvavo app and opening a Bitvavo account
The Bitvavo mobile app lets you buy digital assets from your phone, and opening an account takes an identity verification step: an ID check plus a short video. Support is available through live chat in the app and on the website (an AI assistant with human agents) and by e-mail. Be wary of e-mails that claim to come from Bitvavo and ask you to log in through a link: type the address yourself.
- Sign up in the Bitvavo app or on the website.
- Verify your identity with a government ID and a short video. The check is required for every account.
- Deposit euros by iDEAL/Wero, Bancontact or SEPA from a bank account in your own name. These are free.
- Buy bitcoin or another coin at the market price (0.25%) or with a limit order (0.15%).
- Set up recurring buys if you want to invest a fixed amount at a regular interval.
Who Bitvavo is for, and who should look elsewhere
The short answer of this Bitvavo review: Bitvavo suits EU residents who want to buy and hold crypto in euros at low cost, especially new traders funding with iDEAL or Bancontact, and advanced traders who want a euro order book and a professional trading interface on the same platform. It is a poor fit for futures traders, card users and anyone who wants every product under MiCA.
Good fit if you:
- live in the Netherlands, Belgium or another supported EU country;
- buy €50 to €1,000 at a time and want low, clear fees;
- want recurring buys or a wide choice of coins in euros.
Look elsewhere if you:
- want crypto futures or perpetuals;
- want a crypto debit card;
- only want products that are regulated under MiCA, without staking or lending.
Bitvavo alternatives
If the Bitvavo exchange doesn’t fit, these MiCA-licensed exchanges also serve EU residents:

- Coinbase: licensed in Luxembourg and listed in the US, with higher Advanced fees (0.60% maker, 1.20% taker). See our Coinbase review.
- Crypto.com: licensed in Malta, with a prepaid Visa card, but app buys cost 0.8% plus a spread. See our Crypto.com review.
