How to buy Cardano on Coinbase in Europe (2026 guide)

Updated 23 October 2026 By the editorial team 9 min read How we make money

How to buy Cardano (ADA) on Coinbase in the EU: verify, deposit euros by free SEPA, buy on Advanced from 0.60%, and what €100 and €1,000 really cost.

To buy Cardano on Coinbase in Europe, you open an account with Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., verify your identity, send euros by free SEPA transfer and then buy ADA in the simple app or on Coinbase Advanced. The cheapest route is a limit order on Advanced, which costs 0.60% at the entry tier: €0.60 on a €100 buy and €6.00 on €1,000.

We checked Coinbase’s licence, fee pages and its ADA-EUR market on 23 October 2026. We haven’t bought ADA on Coinbase ourselves, so every figure below comes from Coinbase’s own data or regulator records. Crypto is volatile: only invest money you can afford to lose.

Can you buy Cardano on Coinbase in Europe?

Yes. Every Coinbase customer in the EU is served by Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., which received a MiCA licence from Luxembourg’s financial regulator, the CSSF, on 20 June 2025. That licence is passported to every EEA country, including the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Ireland.

Coinbase’s public exchange API listed an ADA-EUR market as online when we checked on 23 October 2026, so you can buy Cardano directly with euros on Coinbase Advanced. The simple buy screen can differ by country: if Cardano doesn’t appear when you search, check the asset list in the app.

  • Main upside: a large, Nasdaq-listed exchange with a MiCA licence, free SEPA deposits and a simple app.
  • Main catch: high fees. A market order on Advanced costs 1.20% at the entry tier, and Coinbase doesn’t publish the simple-buy spread as a fixed figure.
  • Look elsewhere if cost matters most. Kraken Pro and Bybit EU charge less for the same ADA purchase (see the alternatives below).
Good to knowA MiCA licence means a regulator supervises how Coinbase runs its service. It doesn’t insure your coins: crypto is not covered by the €100,000 deposit guarantee or by investor compensation schemes.

What is Cardano (ADA)?

Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain network for payments and smart contracts, and ADA is its native cryptocurrency. You use ADA to pay transaction fees on the network, to stake, and to use decentralized finance apps built on Cardano.

Unlike Bitcoin, which uses proof of work (mining with specialised computers), Cardano uses proof of stake (PoS): ADA holders delegate their coins to stake pools that produce new blocks. Because there is no mining race, proof of stake avoids most of the energy consumption that proof of work needs. Cardano’s developers and community also present it as a scalable network with low transaction costs, but energy efficiency and technology don’t guarantee adoption or price growth.

ADA price, market cap and trading volume

The ADA price moves fast, in both directions. Next to the current price, the app shows Cardano’s market cap (the price multiplied by the number of coins in circulation) and its 24-hour trading volume. A high market cap and trading volume usually mean more liquidity, so large orders move the price less, but neither tells you where the price goes next. We don’t make price predictions, and nothing on this page is investment advice.

How to buy Cardano on Coinbase, step by step

Buying ADA on Coinbase takes five steps: create the account, verify your identity, deposit euros, place the order and, if you want, move the coins to your own wallet. Plan about 20 minutes, plus 1 to 3 business days for the SEPA transfer to arrive.

  1. Create your account. Download the Coinbase app or go to coinbase.com yourself, rather than through a link in an email or ad, and sign up with your email. Choose a password you don’t use anywhere else and secure the account with two-factor authentication through an authenticator app.
  2. Verify your identity. Coinbase asks for your personal details and a government-issued ID before you can fund the account. Complete this verification first: it is required at every licensed exchange in the EU.
  3. Deposit euros. Add a bank account in your own name and send a SEPA bank transfer. Coinbase says SEPA deposits are free and take 1 to 3 business days.
  4. Buy ADA. For a simple buy, tap Buy, search for Cardano or ADA, enter a euro amount and read the order preview, which shows the spread and Coinbase’s fee, before you confirm. For lower fees, open Coinbase Advanced, pick the ADA-EUR market and place a limit order (maker fee) or a market order (taker fee).
  5. Optional: withdraw to your own wallet. Choose Send, paste your Cardano wallet address, select the Cardano network and send a small test amount first. Under the EU travel rule, Coinbase may ask who owns the receiving wallet and, for larger amounts, ask you to prove it is yours.

Buying crypto with euros: bank transfer or debit card?

A SEPA bank transfer is the cheapest way to fund a Coinbase purchase: Coinbase charges nothing for it, but you need to complete identity verification first and the money takes 1 to 3 business days. A debit card puts the ADA in your account faster, but the fee varies by payment method and isn’t published as a fixed figure for EU customers.

Coinbase supports three fiat currencies: euros, pounds and US dollars. We couldn’t confirm PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay for EU accounts, so check the payment options in the app for your country.

Simple buy or Coinbase Advanced?

The simple buy quotes one price with a spread and a variable fee built in, and a simple limit order adds a 1% execution fee. Coinbase Advanced is an order book: a limit order that waits in the book pays the 0.60% maker fee, and a market order pays the 1.20% taker fee.

If you buy Cardano once a month and value a few taps, the simple buy works, as long as you read the preview. If you buy €500 or more, a limit order on Advanced is usually the cheaper way to buy ADA, but it only fills if the ADA price hits your limit. Advanced fees also fall as your 30-day trading volume or USDC balance grows, down to 0.00% maker and 0.02% taker at the top tiers.

What it costs to buy €100 and €1,000 of ADA

A €100 ADA purchase costs €0.60 to €1.20 in Coinbase fees on Advanced, and €1,000 costs €6.00 to €12.00, with a free SEPA deposit. These are the entry-tier fees we could verify:

Fee€100 buy€1,000 buy
SEPA deposit€0.00€0.00
Advanced, limit order (maker 0.60%)€0.60€6.00
Advanced, market order (taker 1.20%)€1.20€12.00
Simple limit order (1% fee)€1.00 plus any spread€10.00 plus any spread
Simple buySpread plus variable fee, see previewSpread plus variable fee, see preview

A worked example: you send €1,000 by SEPA (€0), place a limit order on Advanced (€6.00) and receive €994 worth of ADA. If you later send it to your own wallet, Coinbase adds a network fee that it estimates when you send. Selling ADA back to euros costs another trading fee, and SEPA withdrawals are free.

One caveat: Coinbase’s public fee pages no longer list Advanced rates, so these come from a copy of the in-app table and may differ slightly for EU accounts; your order preview shows the real figure. Our Coinbase fees page covers every cost.

Can you stake Cardano on Coinbase?

Staking Cardano means delegating ADA to a stake pool that helps run the blockchain network, in return for a share of the rewards. Coinbase’s fee page lists ADA among the assets it stakes for customers and keeps a standard commission of 35% of the rewards, less for Coinbase One members.

How Cardano staking works on the protocol itself, according to cardano.org:

  • Delegated ADA stays in your wallet and remains spendable; there is no lock-up.
  • First rewards arrive about 15 to 20 days after you delegate, if the stake pool produces blocks.
  • Rewards depend on the pool’s performance, its fees and the total stake in the network, so they are never fixed in advance.

On Coinbase, Coinbase stakes on your behalf and holds the coins, so you also take on exchange risk. Staking availability depends on your country, so check the Cardano page in the app. We don’t quote reward rates: they change, and a falling ADA price can easily outweigh any rewards. If you want to stake while holding your own keys, many Cardano wallets let you delegate directly.

How to securely store ADA after buying

Leaving ADA on Coinbase is custodial storage: Coinbase holds the private keys and you access your coins through your account. That is convenient for small amounts you trade, but for larger, long-term holdings many investors store ADA in a Cardano wallet they control, so that only they hold the private keys.

  • Software wallet: a free app that holds your private keys on your phone or computer. Read our overview of wallet types to compare them.
  • Hardware wallet: a small device, such as a Ledger, that keeps your private keys offline as a cold wallet. Ledger devices support Cardano, and you confirm every transaction on the device itself. See what a hardware wallet is.
  • Self-custody trade-off: you remove the exchange risk and keep full control, but nobody can recover your coins if you lose your recovery phrase. Our self-custody guide explains what that means in practice.

To keep your Cardano wallet secure, write the recovery phrase on paper, maintain a second copy in a separate place, never type it into a website, and never share it with anyone claiming to be Coinbase support.

Common mistakes when buying Cardano on Coinbase

Most costly mistakes happen at the payment, order and withdrawal steps. Watch out for these:

  • Skipping the order preview. The simple-buy spread isn’t published as a fixed figure, so the preview is the only place you see the full cost.
  • Using a market order out of habit. On Advanced, a limit order costs half the fee of a market order at the entry tier.
  • Depositing from someone else’s bank account. Coinbase requires the bank account name to match your Coinbase account.
  • Picking the wrong network or address. Send ADA only to a Cardano address on the Cardano network, and test with a small amount. Blockchain transactions can’t be reversed.
  • Trusting unsolicited “support” calls or links. In 2025 criminals bribed offshore support staff to steal data on about 69,000 Coinbase customers. Contact support only through the app, and don’t sign in through links in emails or texts.
  • Investing more than you can afford to lose. Crypto assets can fall sharply, and you can lose all the money you put in.

Selling ADA or buying other cryptocurrencies

To sell ADA, use Sell in the simple app or place a sell order on the ADA-EUR market on Advanced, then withdraw your funds by free SEPA transfer. You can also use the euros to buy other cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, among the 400+ crypto assets Coinbase lists. Save every confirmation: you’ll need the dates and amounts of your transactions for your tax return.

Tax in one line: in the Netherlands, crypto falls in box 3, taxed on a notional return on your assets on 1 January; in Germany, gains on crypto held for more than a year are currently tax-free, though a 2026 draft bill would change that for coins bought from 2027.

Alternatives for buying Cardano in Europe

If Coinbase’s fees put you off, two other MiCA-licensed crypto exchanges list ADA with euros:

  • Kraken: licensed by the Central Bank of Ireland; its public API lists an ADA/EUR pair, and Kraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. See our guide to buying Cardano on Kraken.
  • Bybit EU: licensed in Austria; its public API listed ADA/EUR as trading on 23 October 2026, at a flat 0.25% spot fee (€2.50 on €1,000). Weigh that against Bybit’s February 2025 hack.

Binance is not an option: it has no MiCA licence, and EU users can only withdraw. For the full picture of Coinbase’s licence, fines and security record, read our Coinbase review.
