OKX vs Gemini: EU access, fees and which to choose

Updated 23 October 2026 By the editorial team 10 min read How we make money

EU residents should pick OKX: it holds a MiCA licence in Malta, while Gemini closed all EEA and UK accounts on 6 April 2026. In the US, where OKX runs a separate platform, Gemini offers NYDFS-regulated custody and a Nasdaq listing, but its entry fees of 0.60% / 1.20% are high.

Facts checked 23 October 2026 against each provider's official fee and licence pages.

OKX vs Gemini used to compare a global trading platform with a compliance-led US exchange. For EU residents it’s now settled: on 23 October 2026 only OKX can serve you, through OKX Europe Limited, which holds a MiCA licence from Malta’s MFSA. Gemini closed all UK, EEA and Australian accounts on 6 April 2026 and now continues in the US and Singapore.

For US readers both operate, and the comparison is about cost against custody. OKX serves the US through a separate OKX US platform launched in April 2025; Gemini is a NYDFS-regulated exchange listed on Nasdaq, with high entry fees. One caveat runs through this OKX vs Gemini comparison: our OKX fee figures are for OKX Europe, and OKX US has its own schedule, which we didn’t check. All information was checked on official pages and filings on 23 October 2026. Crypto-assets are volatile and you can lose all the money you put in.

EU residents: Gemini is a wrong wayGemini no longer has EU or UK customers. Its Maltese MiCA authorisation is still listed by ESMA, but it isn’t used for retail clients, so you can’t open a Gemini account in the EU.

OKX vs Gemini: the short answer

For EU residents, OKX wins outright, because it’s the only one of these two cryptocurrency exchanges that serves you. For US residents the choice depends on what you value: Gemini offers regulated custody and public company disclosure, at fees that are high for small orders.

  • Choose OKX if you live in the EU and want spot, margin and regulated futures in one licensed account, with free SEPA transfers.
  • Choose Gemini only if you live in the US (or Singapore) and want a NYDFS-regulated custodian more than low fees.
  • Leave Gemini behind if you’re in Europe: your account has been closed since April 2026.

Can you use OKX and Gemini in the EU?

Only OKX. Since 1 July 2026 only firms authorised under MiCA may provide crypto-asset services to EU residents, and of these two only OKX still operates an EU business.

OKX: MiCA-licensed through OKX Europe

OKX Europe Limited received its MiCA authorisation from the MFSA on 27 January 2025, covering custody, operating a trading platform, exchange, order execution, placing and reception/transmission of orders. ESMA’s register file of 22 October 2026 confirms it, passported to the other EEA countries including the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Ireland. A separate Maltese MiFID II investment firm, which OKX bought in March 2025, offers its X-Perps futures. Dutch users were moved to OKX Europe after a DNB fine for earlier unregistered service.

Gemini: licence still listed, accounts closed

In February 2026 Gemini announced it would leave the UK, the EU, other European markets and Australia, with up to 200 job cuts. Accounts became withdrawal-only on 5 March 2026 and closed on 6 April 2026, and Gemini partnered with eToro to help customers move their assets. It had already left the Netherlands in November 2023.

ESMA’s interim register still lists the August 2025 MiCA authorisation of Gemini Intergalactic EU Ltd in Malta, without an end date. Gemini also lists a Maltese MiFID II entity and an Irish e-money institution. None of that is in use for retail clients, so for EU readers Gemini is closed.

Availability in the US and the UK

In the US both operate under separate entities. Gemini Trust Company is a limited purpose trust company regulated by the NYDFS, and its prediction markets run through Gemini Titan, a CFTC-designated contract market. OKX serves US users through OKX US, launched in April 2025.

In the UK, OKX offers a limited service with financial promotions approved by a third party, Gateway 21 Ltd; we found no own FCA registration. Gemini closed its UK accounts along with the EEA ones. Rules differ by region, so check which entity would hold your account.

Good to knowA MiCA licence means OKX Europe is supervised, not that your crypto is insured. Crypto-assets aren’t covered by investor compensation schemes or the €100,000 EU deposit guarantee.

OKX vs Gemini fees

OKX has far lower trading fees. Its EEA spot fees are 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker with an X-Perps account, and 0.20% maker and 0.35% taker without it. Gemini’s ActiveTrader order book starts at 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker, the taker rate twelve times OKX’s lowest.

Fee structure and volume discounts

Both use a maker-taker fee structure with volume tiers. Gemini’s rates fall to 0.40% / 0.80% from $10,000 of 30-day volume, 0.25% / 0.50% from $25,000, and 0% / 0.02% at $250 million. OKX’s EEA VIP tiers start from €100,001 in total assets or by 30-day volume, and some pairs such as USDC-EUR trade at zero fees. Even at Gemini’s $25,000 tier, its 0.50% taker rate is above OKX’s 0.35% without X-Perps.

OKX’s X-Perps condition

OKX’s lowest spot fees apply only to accounts that have opened X-Perps, its derivatives account. You don’t have to trade futures, only to open the account, so read the X-Perps terms first.

Worked example: €100 and €1,000

Here is what a spot order costs at entry rates, as trade size × fee rate. Gemini quotes in dollars, so read its column as the cost on an order of the same value.

OrderOKX with X-PerpsOKX without X-PerpsGemini ActiveTrader
€100 market order€0.10€0.35€1.20
€1,000 market order€1.00€3.50€12.00
€1,000 limit (maker) order€0.80€2.00€6.00
€100 a month for a year€1.20€4.20€14.40

The total cost gap is large at every size: €11.00 on a single €1,000 market order against OKX with X-Perps, and €8.50 even without it.

Simple buys and the spread

Simple buy screens add a spread that neither exchange fully discloses. OKX’s Convert tool is advertised with zero trading fees, but the spread isn’t published. Gemini’s instant and recurring orders include a spread plus a variable fee; its annual report calls this convenience fee typically around 1% above the market price, or about €1.00 on €100 and €10.00 on €1,000 before the spread.

Deposit and withdrawal fees

OKX is cheaper to fund and to leave for EU users, and Gemini no longer offers euro transfers at all. On OKX, SEPA deposits and SEPA withdrawals are free (your bank may charge) and card purchases cost 1.99%. Gemini’s US schedule charges 3.49% by debit card and 2.50% through PayPal.

A €100 card purchase costs €1.99 on OKX and the equivalent of €3.49 on Gemini; on €1,000 that’s €19.90 against €34.90. A bank transfer is the cheaper payment method on OKX. OKX’s euro transfers are limited to verified EEA residents, and the first withdrawal needs proof that the bank account is yours.

Winner on fees: OKX.

OKX vs Gemini for active traders

OKX has the deeper offer for active traders in Europe; Gemini’s advanced tools serve US users. Both run an order book with advanced order types and API access, so the differences are in derivatives and where you live.

Derivatives and margin

OKX launched spot margin for EEA customers in December 2025, with up to 10x leverage on BTC and ETH against USDC. In April 2026 it added X-Perps, MiFID-regulated futures with a five-year expiry and up to 10x leverage, at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on the regular tier. Gemini offers perpetual futures and margin at 0.02% maker and 0.07% taker at the lowest tier, but EU users can’t use them.

Opening and closing a €1,000 futures position with market orders costs €1.00 on OKX and €1.40 on Gemini. Funding payments come on top of trading fees.

Most retail traders lose money with leverageWith 10x leverage, a price move of roughly 10% against you can wipe out your margin. Most retail traders lose money with leveraged products. Our guide to derivatives explains margin, funding and liquidation.

Advanced interfaces, liquidity and copy trading

Gemini’s ActiveTrader gives US traders an order book for limit orders, with API access. OKX serves copy trading pages on its EEA site, but we haven’t verified their exact scope for EU users. We didn’t measure liquidity on either order book, so we don’t rank them on execution.

Winner for active traders in Europe: OKX. In the US, compare OKX US’s own fee schedule before you decide.

Supported cryptocurrencies and other products

OKX supports far more coins: about 270 for EEA users, based on the 272 assets with EUR pairs in its public API, with EUR and PLN as fiat. Gemini supports 65+, based on 67 assets marked tradable in its disclosures of 21 May 2026, with USD and SGD as fiat. Both cover bitcoin and ether; if you want specific coins beyond the largest digital assets, check each supported list first.

Cards, staking and prediction markets

OKX launched the OKX Card, a Mastercard, in Europe in January 2026, and serves staking pages on its EEA site whose terms we haven’t verified. Gemini offers staking, a US credit card and prediction markets through Gemini Titan, which the New York Attorney General sued in April 2026 over alleged unlicensed gambling and sports wagering in New York. Neither offers stocks to EU users.

Winner on coins: OKX.

Is your money safe with OKX or Gemini?

No crypto exchange is a safe place for money you can’t afford to lose, but the two protect funds in different ways. Gemini leads on regulated custody; OKX leads on published reserves.

Custody, cold storage and insurance

Gemini keeps custody in offline cold storage with geographically distributed hardware security modules and MPC. Gemini Trust acts as a NYDFS-regulated qualified custodian and has completed SOC 1 and SOC 2 examinations. OKX publishes no cold storage share. Neither publishes an insurance fund figure, so don’t assume insurance coverage for your balance.

Proof of reserves

OKX publishes a monthly proof of reserves using a Merkle tree and zk-STARK proofs. Its 48th report (October 2026 snapshot) showed $29.4 billion in primary assets and a BTC reserve ratio of 110%. We found no proof-of-reserves attestation on Gemini’s official pages. Gemini disclosed about $15.9 billion of assets on the platform and about 601,000 monthly transacting users at the end of 2025.

Regulatory actions and incidents

Both have serious records. OKX suspended crypto withdrawals from 16 October to late November 2020 while a private-key holder assisted a police investigation in China. In February 2025 its global operator pleaded guilty in the US to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to pay about $504 million. Malta’s FIAU fined its European arm about €1.1 million in April 2025, and DNB fined the operator €2.25 million for serving Dutch customers without registration.

Gemini’s record centres on Gemini Earn. Genesis, its lending partner, froze withdrawals in November 2022, locking Earn users’ funds until May and June 2024. The NYDFS fined Gemini $37 million in 2024 plus a $40 million contribution to Earn users, and a New York Attorney General settlement required a further distribution of about $50 million. Gemini settled a CFTC case for $5 million in January 2025, and the SEC dismissed its Earn lawsuit in January 2026. Data breaches at third-party vendors in 2022, and at a service provider of an ACH banking partner in 2024 affecting about 15,000 users, exposed some personal data.

Two factor authentication

Turn on two factor authentication with an authenticator app on any account, use a withdrawal-address allowlist where offered, and keep long-term holdings in a wallet you control. That protects you against the most common event: a stolen password.

User experience, support and tax records

Both require identity verification. Gemini requires full verification to trade and to withdraw crypto or fiat; OKX requires it for every account and limits euro transfers to verified EEA residents. We haven’t tested either app, so we don’t rank them on ease of use.

Gemini lists a help centre and a web request form for support. We couldn’t confirm OKX’s support channels on an official page. Whichever you use, download your transaction history regularly: you’ll need it for your tax return, and it’s easier while the account is open.

Which should you choose, OKX or Gemini?

Choose by where you live first. For EU readers that settles it.

Choose OKX if

  • you live in the EU and want a MiCA-licensed exchange with spot, margin and futures;
  • you want free SEPA deposits and withdrawals and low taker rates;
  • you accept a record that includes a $504 million US settlement.

Choose Gemini if

  • you live in the US and want a NYDFS-regulated qualified custodian;
  • you value a public company with detailed SEC filings;
  • you accept 0.60% / 1.20% entry fees or trade enough volume to lower them.

Choose neither if

  • you’re a beginner in the EU who wants a simple app for small euro buys;
  • you don’t want a derivatives account just to get OKX’s lowest spot fees.

How we compared OKX and Gemini

We’re an editorial team, and we didn’t open accounts for this comparison. On 23 October 2026 we checked OKX’s EEA fee pages, licence pages and public API, Gemini’s fee schedules, support pages and SEC filings, and ESMA’s MiCA register (update of 22 October 2026). Figures that change often carry that date. Our scoring follows our methodology. Nothing here is investment advice.

Questions people ask

Is OKX better than Gemini for European users?

Yes, because only OKX serves them. OKX Europe holds a MiCA licence from Malta's MFSA, while Gemini closed all EEA and UK accounts on 6 April 2026. OKX's EEA spot fees are 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker with an X-Perps account.

Is Gemini crypto in trouble?

Gemini closed its UK, EEA and Australian accounts on 6 April 2026 and announced up to 200 job cuts, about 25% of staff. In 2026 it also faced a securities class action over its IPO and a New York Attorney General lawsuit against its prediction markets arm. It continues to serve the US and Singapore.

Can OKX be trusted?

OKX serves EU users under a MiCA licence and publishes monthly proof of reserves; its October 2026 report showed a BTC reserve ratio of 110%. Its record includes a 2025 US guilty plea with a payment of about $504 million and fines of €2.25 million from DNB and about €1.1 million in Malta.

Is Gemini safer than OKX?

Neither removes the risk. Gemini has NYDFS-regulated custody with offline cold storage and SOC 1 and SOC 2 examinations, but no proof of reserves we could find and a costly Earn history. OKX publishes monthly proof of reserves and holds an EU licence, but paid about $504 million after a US guilty plea.

Has anyone lost money on Gemini Earn?

Earn users couldn't withdraw from November 2022, when lending partner Genesis froze withdrawals after FTX collapsed, until May and June 2024, when about $2.2 billion was returned in kind, according to Gemini's annual report. The NYDFS fined Gemini $37 million and required a $40 million contribution to Earn users.

Which has lower fees, OKX or Gemini?

OKX. A €1,000 market order costs €1.00 on OKX's EEA platform with an X-Perps account, or €3.50 without, against €12.00 at Gemini's 1.20% entry-tier taker fee. Our OKX figures are for OKX Europe; OKX US has its own fee schedule.
